California live road-risk map

Driving conditions across California shift hour to hour with weather, time of day, and what is happening on the road right now. This live tool blends current weather (National Weather Service), active California Highway Patrol traffic incidents (Caltrans QuickMap), and historical crash patterns (California Crash Reporting System) into a simple per-city road-risk view.

City markers are colored by a composite road-risk score; red dots are active CHP crashes (a pulsing ring means it was reported in the last 5 minutes). Use the time filter to focus on the most recent incidents. Data refreshes about once a minute.

How the score works

  • Weather: rain, fog, and low visibility raise crash risk; clear conditions do not.
  • Time: late afternoon (roughly 2–6pm) and Fridays carry the highest share of California crashes historically.
  • Live load: active CHP collisions near a city push its score up in real time.

Data sources

Live weather: National Weather Service (api.weather.gov). Live incidents: Caltrans QuickMap public CHP feed (about 1-minute refresh). Historical crashes: California Crash Reporting System (CHP / data.ca.gov).

Important

This road-risk score is an educational heuristic. It is NOT a crash prediction, navigation guidance, or legal advice, and it does not assess fault or injury in any specific incident. Always follow official traffic and weather authorities when driving.
